I have been a learning disabilities nurse since 1988. During my career I have worked in a wide range of settings in the UK and abroad. I have a specialist interest in the mental health of children and young people with a learning disability and worked in this field as a community nurse for many years.
Whilst living in New Zealand I was part of a specialist interdisciplinary team focusing on the transition of a large number of service users returning back into their communities from institutional care. I moved on to manage a range of regional community based disability services and took the opportunity to widen my nursing scope of practice and achieved NZ registration as a mental health nurse.
I returned to the UK and following the events of Winterbourne View commenced my role as a Consultant Nurse within the private sector as part of a turnaround team focusing on nurse leadership, development, patient safety and governance. I returned to the NHS as a Mental Health Clinician for Adopted and Looked After Children.
